This glossary aims to provide you with a better understanding of the key concepts and industry-specific language used in the world of custom cushions. Let’s dive in:

Cushion Cover

The removable outer layer of a cushion that encases the cushion insert. It protects the cushion and can be easily changed or washed.

Cushion Insert

The core component of a cushion, which provides support and comfort. It can be filled with materials such as foam, feathers, down, polyester fiber, or a combination of these.

Foam

A popular cushion filling material that provides support and comfort. Different types of foam, such as polyurethane foam or memory foam, can be used based on the desired cushion properties.

Down

Soft and fluffy feathers obtained from ducks or geese. Down is a luxurious and highly comfortable cushion filling material.

Feather

Feathers, typically from ducks or geese, used as a cushion filling material. They offer a balance of softness and support.

Polyester Fiber

Synthetic fibers made from polyester that are used as a cushion filling material. Polyester fiber provides good durability and resilience.

Lumbar Support

A cushion design that provides support to the lower back, promoting proper spinal alignment and reducing discomfort.

Box Cushion

A cushion with clearly defined edges and a neat square or rectangular shape. It typically features separate panels for the top, bottom, and sides, creating a box-like appearance.

Knife Edge

A cushion design that features a straight seam connecting the top and bottom layers without any additional piping or trim.

Piping

A decorative trim that is sewn along the edges of a cushion cover, creating a finished and tailored look. It can be made from the same or contrasting fabric.

Welt

A decorative trim similar to piping but with a cord inserted into the fabric, providing a raised edge.

Tufting

A technique where fabric is gathered and secured with buttons or stitches, creating depressions or dimples on the cushion’s surface. It adds texture and visual interest.

Ticking

A tightly woven fabric used to encase cushion inserts and prevent feathers or down from poking through.

Dacron

A brand name for polyester fiberfill that is commonly used as a cushion filling material. It adds loft and resilience to cushions.

Dye Lot

The production batch in which fabric or materials are dyed. Variations in color can occur between different dye lots, so it’s important to order fabric from the same dye lot for consistency.

Fill Power

A measurement that indicates the quality and loftiness of down or feather filling. Higher fill power indicates greater insulation and fluffiness.

Zipper Closure

A type of closure used on cushion covers, allowing easy removal and insertion of the cushion insert. Zippers can be concealed or visible, depending on the design.

Welted Cushion

A cushion design that features a welted seam along the edges, adding visual interest and a tailored appearance.
